Amyris: West Indian Sandalwood

Amyris is a flowering, bushy tree related to the citrus family, Rutaceae. Its name comes from the Greek word amyron meaning “highly scented”. It is also known as West Indian Sandalwood. Amyris is a less expensive option for lovers of Sandalwood. In fact, the Amyris tree was not classified as its own species until the late 1800s when it was observed under a microscope and found to be different from the true Sandalwood.

Amyris has a deep, woodsy scent that is appealing to those searching out a more masculine aroma. It is known for its uplifting qualities, and is used often in massage and meditation. It works well in cosmetics, and soaps due to its ability to soften the skin and slow the effects of aging. It also has
sedative, antiseptic, and decongestant properties making it beneficial for therapeutic uses. It's also interesting to not that it has the ability to cool not only the body, but suppresses frustration, irritability, and sexual tension.

Because of its similarities to Sandalwood, Amyris is a more economical choice for many. True Sandalwood can cost us much as $125.00 for a small 5 ml. bottle, whereas Good Thyme Oils offers their larger 15 ml. bottle of Amyris for only $8.95!
